Reuters news agency reports today that as British Prime Minister Theresa May plans on starting the two year long Brexit to leave the European Union next month, the Scottish government is increasingly sure it can win independence from Britain in a new referendum. Although last June the Scots voted to stay in the EU, Britain voted to leave forcing Scotland out as well. Charles Grant, an advisor to the Scottish government’s Standing Council on Europe, said that due to hardships that may be encountered during a Brexit, “…the harder the Brexit, the more likely they are to break away.” During the 2014 referendum, Scots rejected independence citing economic concerns that may have been caused by leaving Britain. Scotland and England have maintained a cultural, political and trading union for over 300 years. A Scottish lawmaker speaking on condition of anonymity feels that if a vote is not called now, “it’s off the cards for a generation”.
