In a Reuters news agency report today, US Democrats chose former Labor Secretary Tom Perez as chairman to head the Democratic National Committee. Perez has the daunting task of rebuilding the Democratic Party after the November 8th defeat to Republican President Donald Trump. The loss of the 2016 presidential election revealed the party’s divisions as establishment democrats voting for Hillary Clinton pitted themselves against progressives supporting Bernie Sanders. Perez feels that changing the party to a more grassroots culture would benefit them since he feels democrats suffer from, “…a crisis of confidence,” and, “…a crisis of relevance.” US Representative Kieth Ellison (D), the first Muslim elected to the US congress, and backed by US Senator Bernie Sanders (I), lost the 235-200 vote to Perez. Perez is the son of immigrants from the Dominican Republic.
