Thousands Leave Mosul

As reported by the Associated Press today, thousands of residents of Mosul have fled from the city in Iraq as Iraqi forces advance from a large military base. Brigadier General Yahya Rasool of the Joint Military Operations in Iraq said that Islamic State held Wadi Hajar district in western Mosul fell to Iraqi special forces. Clearing operations were still going on in the area and the special forces were close to linking up with the Iraqi Federal Police who are advancing along the Tigris River according to special forces commander Brigadier General Haider al-Obeidi. The latest development is part of an attack launched by Iraqi forces last week to remove the Islamic State from Iraq’s second largest city.
