The Associated Press reports today that US President Donald Trump sent tweets in the early morning hours accusing former US President Barack Obama of wiretapping his Trump Tower building during the campaign. The following was the first of several tweets from President Trump:
Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my “wires tapped” in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!
The AP report went on to state that Obama spokesman Kevin Lewis said a cardinal rule of the Obama administration was that no White House official ever interfered in any Justice Department investigations, which are supposed to be conducted free of political influence. It was not clear if the reporting implied that there was a Justice Department investigation against Trump at the time the phones were tapped or if others in the Justice Department may have ordered the phones to be tapped. The Justice Department does not need a specific presidential or White House staff request to tap a phone as outlined in 18 U.S. Code Section 2518 – Procedure for Interception of Wire, Oral, or Electronic Communications.
