America Loses Her Identity

According to an Associated Press report today, United States citizens can not agree on what it means to be an “American”. A survey from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research shows Republicans are far more likely to cite a culture grounded in Christian beliefs and the traditions of early European immigrants as essential to U.S. identity while Democrats prefer to look upon the country’s history of mixing of people from around the globe and a tradition of offering refuge to the persecuted. The survey also shows that 7 out of 10 people feel that the US is losing her identity regardless of which one they embrace. The survey did show that Americans as a whole agree that a fair judicial system and rule of law, the freedoms enshrined in the Constitution, and the ability to get good jobs and achieve the American dream should make up part of the identity.
