The Associated Press reports today that an oil tanker, the Aris 13, has been hijacked off the coast of Somalia. A local elder told the AP that foreign vessels have been illegally fishing in their waters but no information was given about the names or nationality of those vessels. The local elder said that fishermen, some who are former pirates, were looking for foreign vessels since yesterday. The Aris 13 is manned by 8 Sri Lankans and was carrying fuel from Djibouti to Mogadishu, Somalia. Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry said they were contacting shipping agents and officials to ensure the safety and welfare of the ship’s crew. This is the first hijacking of a large vessel off the Somalian coast since 2012.
