As reported by Reuters news agency today, Turkey accused Germany of supporting the attempted coup last year as it holds a German newspaper’s journalist charged as a terrorist agent. Turkey has said US based cleric, Fethullah Gulen, was behind the coup last year to overthrow President Tayyip Erdogan’s administration. The failed coup in July led to the deaths of 240 people. Bruno Kahl, President of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service said regarding the coup link that, “Turkey has tried to convince us of that at every level but so far it has not succeeded.” In response, President Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin said, “It’s an effort to invalidate all the information we have given them on FETO. It’s a sign of their support for FETO.” FETO is a Turkish acronym used to describe what they refer to as the Gulenist Terrorist Organization.
Turkey is also holding German journalist, Deniz Yucel of the newspaper Die Welt. Turkish President Erdogan called Yucel a terrorist agent and said, “Thank God he has been arrested”.
