As reported by Reuters news agency today, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon sought backing from Scotland’s parliament in Edinburgh to hold a referendum for independence from the United Kingdom. First Minister Sturgeon’s proposal kicked off the debate to hold a referendum in 2018 or 2019. The Reuters report stated the proposal is almost certain to win the chamber’s backing which will allow First Minister Sturgeon to ask London for approval to move forward. First Minister Sturgeon pushed for alternatives for Scotland since June of 2016 when the UK approved leaving the European Union, but her requests were dismissed by the UK government in Westminster.
