Iraqi Forces to Change Tactics in Battle for Mosul

Reuters news agency reports today that Iraqi forces will use new tactics against the Islamic State held up in the western half of Mosul, Iraq. Mosul is the last major city in Iraq that the Islamic State has fortified and maintains a presence. The offensive, now in its sixth month, has been met by fierce resistance as the Islamic State employs car bombs, snipers, mortar fire and booby traps slowing the Iraqi military’s advance. U.S. Army Brigadier General John Richardson said the Iraqi forces may open another front and build up positions in Mosul’s Old City. Brigadier General Richardson went on to say, “That is going to force ISIS to fight on two fronts, and I don’t think they have that capability”.
