Assad No Longer in US Sights

Reuters news agency reports today that unseating Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is no longer an interest of the United States. US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said, “Our priority is no longer to sit there and focus on getting Assad out.” She went on to say, “We can’t necessarily focus on Assad the way that the previous administration did.”

Now in its 6th year, the civil war in Syria was part of the 2011 Arab Spring uprising that originated in Tunisia and then spread to other countries such as Egypt, Yemen, Libya and Iraq. Due to the destabilization of the region, the Islamic State terrorist organization held large areas in western Iraq and eastern parts of Syria.
