Democrats Divided on Gorsuch

Reuters news agency reports today that most US Democratic senators are opposed to confirming Supreme Court Nominee, Judge Niel Gorsuch’s appointment. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) stated, “Today, we still know very little about Judge Gorsuch’s core beliefs, he has left us with substantial doubt”. Appointed by President Donald Trump, Judge Gorsuch has said on many occasions that he follows the letter of the law and does not insert his own personal beliefs into his decisions. It was not understood from the report why Senator Blumenthal is focused on the judge’s core beliefs or which beliefs he feels are important.

Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI) said regarding Judge Gorsuch that, “His refusal to answer questions on long-decided cases or condemn attacks on the judiciary during the hearing demonstrates that he is outside of the legal mainstream.” There were no specifics of any refusals to questions given or examples of how Judge Gorsuch was not in the “legal mainstream” by not condemning attacks on the judiciary.

Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) said on Thursday that they would vote for Judge Gorsuch. Since Republicans only hold 52 seats in the Senate, Democrats could force a filibuster as 60 votes are required for a Supreme Court Nominee confirmation vote. Some Democrats are wanting to avoid that course of action.
