In a report by Reuters news agency, lawmakers passed measures that could force the Central European University out of Hungary. The university, funded by George Soros, has violated regulations in awarding diplomas according to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The law was created to address the “administrative shortcomings of foreign universities” according to the report. David Kostelancik, a top US diplomat in Hungary said Washington was “disappointed by the accelerated passage of legislation targeting Central European University.” It was not clear in the report who from the United States capital was disappointed. The Reuters report said thousands of students, professors and supporters protested against the law in Budapest on Sunday.
