The Associated Press reports today that US Senate Republicans used the “nuclear option” clearing the way for Judge Neil Gorsuch to take his post in the Supreme Court. By rewriting the chamber’s rules, Republicans cleared the way for President Donald Trump’s nominee to become a Supreme Court Justice. As expected, Democrats filibustered depriving Gorsuch of the 60 votes needed for the appointment.
Initially overruled, but won on appeal, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) raised a point of order allowing for a simple majority vote. The Senate vote was 52 for, and 48 against, the Supreme Court nomination. The senate vote was split along party lines. A final confirmation vote is expected on Friday according to the report.
