As reported by Reuters news agency, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said the US strikes were illegal and “one step away from military clashes with Russia.” The strikes targeted Ash Sha’irat airbase which is located southeast of Homs, Syria. The destruction of the airbase was in response to the Syrian government bombing of the northwestern town of Khan Sheikhoun in Syria. US naval destroyers USS Porter and USS Ross launched more than 50 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the airbase.
In a story by the Chicago Tribune, it is reported that many of the victims were flown into Turkey for treatment. Turkish doctors conducted autopsies on three victims and confirmed that chemical weapons were used in the strike on Tuesday. Initial reports stated that sarin was used in the attack, but it was not clear from the report if that was the actual chemical agent. According to the report, Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag stated that the World Health Organization supervised the autopsies and the results were sent to The Hague for further analysis.
It is still not clear from all reports reviewed on this tragedy whether the bombs themselves were laden with chemical agents or if there was another explanation that caused their release killing over 70 people and injuring hundreds more.
