AP: China has Islamophobia

A scathing Associated Press report states that residents’ resistance to the building of a mosque in Hefei, China is indicative of “islamophobia” enabled by online free speech. The report states anti-Muslim posts by suburban middle-class homeowners on social media “was the first sign of how fiercely the city opposed a planned mosque in their neighborhood.” The report went on to state that “a surge in anti-Muslim sentiment online is spreading into communities across China.” In the report, residents “complained the mosque would occupy space promised for a park” while “others warned that safety in the area would be compromised.”
