Reuters news agency reports that a student at a Mardan, Pakistan university was beaten to death by a mob of students accusing him of blasphemy. The report states a video obtained by Reuters shows student Mashal Khan “stripped naked and beaten with planks until his skull caved in as other students looked on.” During the attack, the mob of students shouted “Allahu Akbar” as they beat him. After the killing, his fellow students wanted to burn his body. Khan, a journalism student, was accused of sharing blasphemous content on social media but it was not understood exactly what he shared.
Reuters went on to report that insulting the Prophet Mohammed is a capital crime in Pakistan and that dozens are on death row for that very reason. In the Muslim majority Pakistan, the mere accusation of blasphemy can lead to extreme violence.
