In a report by Reuters news agency today, 900 US troops have been deployed to Orzysz, Poland as part of a multinational force. Joined by 150 British and 120 Romanian soldiers, the contingent has been posted 35 miles (57 km) south of Kaliningrad, Russia where nuclear capable missiles and air missile defense systems are located. Three other formations are due to become operational by June and stationed across the Baltic region.
At a welcoming ceremony for the troops, NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, US General Curtis Scaparrotti said, “Deploying of these troops to Poland is a clear demonstration of NATO’s unity and resolve and sends a clear message to any potential aggressor.” Since Russia’s 2014 annexation of The Crimean Peninsula in southern Ukraine, Poland has lobbied NATO for troops.
