MOAB in Afghanistan: Right Weapon for Right Target

The Associated Press reports today that the US military strike Thursday in the mountainous region of Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan killed 36 Islamic State fighters. The GBU-43 Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB) bomb hit a tunnel complex and ammunition stores destroying them. At a news conference, US General John W. Nicholson, Commander of US forces in Afghanistan said, “This is the right weapon for the right target.”

The GBU-43 Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB) has a blast yield of 11 tons TNT. Nicknamed the “mother of all bombs”, the GBU-43 is designed to be delivered by MC-130E Combat Talon I or MC-130H Combat Talon II aircraft which are C-130 Hercules variants. The MC-130 aircraft are operated by the United States Air Force Special Operations Command.
