Reuters news agency reports today that US President Donald Trump’s administration dropped former President Barack Obama administration’s lawsuit that accused North Carolina of discrimination against their lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) residents. Known as the “bathroom bill”, North Carolina’ s House Bill 2 required transgender people use the bathrooms, changing rooms and showers that corresponded to the sex on their birth certificates in state-run buildings. Transgendered individuals want to use bathrooms of their choosing regardless of their biological sex.
According to the report, the court filing by the Justice Department said it had dropped its lawsuit because the North Carolina legislature had replaced it with a new law called House Bill 142. American Civil Liberty Union’s LGBT Project Director James Esseks is not satisfied with the new law because it prohibits cities and counties from creating their own nondiscriminatory ordinances until 2020 and gives the state legislature the power to control bathroom access.
Some businesses and sports leagues boycotted North Carolina because they felt the law was discriminating against the LGBT community. Although only transgenders would be affected by the law, it was not clear from the report how lesbians, gays and bisexuals would face discrimination under House Bill 142.
