The Associated Press reports today that US President Donald Trump’s administration will arm Syria’s Kurdish militias in an effort to recapture Raqqa from the Islamic State. Turkey views the Kurds as terrorists and strongly objects to the move. Last week Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan vowed to continue attacks on ethnic Kurds.
Kurdish militant groups are responsible for saving many of the minority Yazidis from the Islamic State, known also by its Arabic acronym Daesh. Kurdish groups have also fought the Islamic State and have reclaimed areas in Syria and Iraq from the terrorist group. The Islamic State tortured and killed Yazidis who they consider devil worshipers and sold young Kurdish girls and women into slavery. Most of the young girls are being used as sex slaves.
