Reuters news agency reports today that even though some US universities are seeing a reduction in foreign applications due to visa concerns, about sixty percent of those graduating from the top ten US economics departments are from other countries . The mostly Iranian student focused report states that some academics fear the reduction in foreign applications may be a sign of things to come due to President Donald Trump’s “America First” policy.
The report also states that although there is a reduction in Iranian students due to a travel ban from war torn countries or countries where effective vetting of potential visitors to the US is not possible, colleges such as Rice University will have more students than expected from Europe and Latin America. With over 90 million US citizens out of work, it was not understood from the report if those individuals would have any additional educational opportunities due to the decrease in foreign applications.
