Reuters news agency reports today that Venezuela has 5,000 SA-24 Man-Portable Air-Defense System (MANPADS) missiles, also known as the Igla-S. The shoulder launched surface-to-air missiles were obtained from Russia by Venezuela’s late President Hugo Chavez. The launchers can be operated by one person and pose a serious threat to commercial and military aircraft. According to the report, experts say there are worries that the weapons could be stolen, sold or somehow channeled to the wrong hands. This concern has increased by the current level of civil unrest in the South American nation.
