Macron Visits Greece, Pushes for EU Finance Minister/Parliament

Reuters news agency reports that French President Emmanuel Macron backed Germany’s idea of a European Monetary Fund (EMF) to counter economic shocks in euro zone member states but stressed the ultimate goal of deeper integration should remain.

President Macron wants to see the creation of a euro zone finance minister and parliament, as well as a stand-alone budget for the currency bloc to cushion economic shocks and head off future crises. Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, both expressed support for Macron’s vision of a closer euro zone. However, President Macron is running into resistance in Berlin despite conciliatory public signals from German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
